About Us
Danya International, Inc.
Founded in 1996, Danya International, Inc., (Danya) is a health communications research
firm headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, with a second location in Atlanta,
Georgia. Our mission is to impact global public health and education through the
development and implementation of innovative health communication, research, and
technology programs. Danya has a corporate commitment to bring research and technology
to people for purposes of improving health, enhancing well-being, and increasing
knowledge. To achieve these goals, Danya emphasizes: (1) science-based research
and practice evidence; (2) research-to-practice technology transfer; (3) a commitment
to the improvement of public health knowledge; and (4) the use of new, appropriate,
and practical technologies to communicate public health and educational information.
Danya consists of several core business areas, which encompass child and family
health, mental health, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and health promotion
initiatives. In particular, Danya continues to build on its strong capabilities,
through innovative technology and design, in developing targeted educational materials
for various audiences (e.g., parents, youth, teachers, researchers, and healthcare
providers) on such issues as Autism Spectrum Disorders, child and adolescent mental
health, reproductive health, and applying research to practice.
Michael O’Hara, Ph.D.
Dr. Michael O’Hara is Professor of Psychology and a Starch Faculty Fellow
at the University of Iowa. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh
in 1980 and has spent his entire academic career at the University of Iowa. Dr.
O’Hara has more than 90 publications including journal articles, books, and
book chapters, most of which address issues related to perinatal mood disorders.
Dr. O’Hara has received several grants from the National Institute of Mental
Health and the Health Resources and Services Administration to support his work.
He is an associate editor for Psychological Bulletin and he is on the editorial
boards of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and Journal of Reproductive and Infant
Psychology. He is also a section editor for the Archives of Women’s Mental
Health. Dr. O’Hara has served as the President of the Marcé Society
(the premier international society addressing perinatal mood disorders) and was
given its lifetime achievement award (the Marcé Medal) in 2000. He also has
served as President of the Society for Research in Psychopathology.
Scott Stuart, M.D.
Dr. Scott Stuart is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of
Iowa. His research interests include perinatal depression and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
He is coauthor (with Michael Robertson) of Interpersonal Psychotherapy: A Clinician’s
Guide (2003, Oxford University Press) and has written many peer-reviewed journal
articles on perinatal mood disorders. He has been at the University of Iowa since
1991, where he also completed an M.A. in Preventive Medicine. He earned an M.D.
from the University of Kansas and completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University
of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Stuart and Dr. O’Hara have served as Co-Directors of the Iowa Depression
and Clinical Research Center (IDCRC) since 1996. The IDCRC is the site for studies
regarding the causes, consequences, and treatment of postpartum and antenatal depression,
and is recognized as one of the leading centers in the world for the study of perinatal
mental health and for the study of Interpersonal Psychotherapy. The primary foci
of the IDCRC are developing new treatments for perinatal women, evaluating those
treatments, improving access to effective treatments, and conducting studies which
foster illness prevention. The IDCRC also has specific teaching goals, including
the training of individuals who will conduct new research (including junior faculty,
postdoctoral and graduate students, residents, and fellows) and the training of
individuals in the community who can effectively deliver new treatments being developed.
Dr. O’Hara and Dr. Stuart have received several grants from the National Institute
of Mental Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Health
Resources and Services Administration to support their work.
